Songs of Distant Middle Earth

Beck’s out tonight, and I’m watching The Lord of the Rings… for the first time.

Yeah, yeah, I know, I’m probably the only person on the planet who hasn’t seen it.

Once upon a long time ago, I thrived on this kind of thing — I think I saw every SF&F film made through the 80s and early 90s. I was a con junkie, going frequently, having started with Chattacon II in 1977, and ending with Minicon or Chattacon or LibertyCon in the early 90s. I pubbed zines, I worked on concoms.

So long ago, and such a big part of my life at the time. It seemed I hardly slept or breathed without something SF being there. All my social life, all my spare time, every waking moment was spent reading, writing, drawing…. creating.

And, I gave it all up. You could say I grew up.

Watching LotR tonight brings back the distant echoes of that once lived lifestyle (fiawol, you know). That’s a little spooky to me, to feel the call that strongly again.
